One thing I am constantly seeing, with both my clients and in general – is a complete focus towards being negative and focusing on the negative aspects in life. Many people cause themselves more harm and stress by focusing on the negative rather than focusing on the positive.
It is okay to want to more out of our training and nutrition, and out of life in general. But we should always be looking to striving towards progress rather than perfection. We should be striving to push a little more, eat a little better, and think a bit more positive rather than trying to radically change our life all in a day. Habits are not created in a day and they take a while to change and adapt – this is why we are constantly talking about looking towards the long term.
Negativity has a vicious cycle, in that it constantly brings about more negativity. Let’s take an example: We start the day off stressed in the morning, which builds gradually over the course of the day until we say ‘stuff it’ and then end up eating everything in sight to comfort ourselves – only then to wake up the next day feeling guilty about what we have done.
Now let’s flip this around: We start the day off stressed, but we know that good nutrition is going to help our energy levels. Not only that, but the training we do later that day will help to boost our mood, push up gently towards our goals and improve our body – in the long run making us feel less stressed, more positive and feeling good about ourselves!
So the next time you are feeling stressed out or have negative feelings towards your mind and body, don’t feed that energy! Instead try this: Think about nourishing the body to fuel ourselves, and think about the positive long term benefits of having the life you want and being happy in yourself.
