Reasons you aren’t losing weight

It can be frustrating when you want to change your body and it simply isn’t working. However there could be a number of factors that contribute to why you aren’t able to lose weight.

The biggest one I see as a coach is no tracking. The way to lose weight is a fairly simple one (with some exceptions), burn more energy than you take in. However, do you truly know how much you are taking in? If you aren’t tracking in some form (food diary, food recall) then you are mostly chancing things. You may also find that your weekends or evenings out are causing massive increases to your calories without even realising!

By tracking your food you will get a far better idea as to exactly how much energy you are consuming and where we need to go in order for our bodies to change.

You rely too much on the scale. Remember that changing our body is not all about just losing weight. Not only this – but there are so many factors which can influence our change in weight that using this as your only measure for success is a recipe for disaster. We should incorporate other measures also such as using tape measurements, progress photos or even just how our clothes fit.

You aren’t getting enough sleep. This one is a little tricky particularly if you work shift patterns – however sleep should still remain a priority when it comes to losing weight. Without sufficient sleep we will be unable to recover effectively from our training, as well as being unable to perform well in the gym. A lack of sleep also causes cortisol, the stress hormone, to be produced in the body causing issues with our metabolism.

So ensure that you are tracking through some form of your food intake, body and ensure good sleep habits so you look and feel great!
