As trainers, we often forget that not everyone is accustomed to the terms we talk in. Sometimes it can sound like riddles!
So when we start talking about nutrition, what we really are talking about is our food and being able to nourish our bodies effectively. This means we need to eat lots of different foods with different sources of protein, fat, carbohydrates and vitamins and minerals in order for our body to work in the right way.
As we know, being deficient in vitamins and minerals can lead to health complications which if not corrected can cause serious damage to our body.
Now there are some foods we should always eat more of, like fruits and vegetables, and some foods that we should certainly eat less of – like things higher in sugar or certain fats, such as hydrogenated fats found in foods like cakes or biscuits.
We should use our food we eat on a day to day basis to provide our bodies with enough energy to last throughout the day (carbohydrates), whilst being able to keep our hormonal levels functioning (fats) and being able to recover from activity or exercise and keep strong (protein).
Remember that just like anything else we do, our nutrition for the most part comes down to habits. Some of the habits we have, such as drinking lots of water – are a good thing. Some of the habits we have however, such as having 5 pints on the weekend, are perhaps not such good habits.
So what we need to do is look at changing those habits over time, so that we can still enjoy our food and nourish our bodies effectively. This will ensure success and will help keep us happy and healthy over a long term.
